In a ventilation device for the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle, in which a shut-off device for exterior air which is charged with noxious or pungent materials is actuated as a function of the output signal of a measuring sensor which is related to a predetermined reference value, the system can be matched to the human sense of smell in that the reference value is varied in accordance with the variation in the signal of the measuring sensor.
