The absorption of the noise pollution from cooling towers and blowers is substantially improved by silencers which are arranged in the direction of propagation of the sound, or rather the air flow, and are assembled from individual silencer elements without being subjected to stress. In this arrangement, the silencer elements are preferably provided as elements whose longitudinal sides are produced from films. Such silencer elements produced from plastic films are protected both against contamination and against moisture and attack by bacteria, since they have a surface that is sealed on all sides. Surprisingly, they provide high absorption values, this being achieved by the particular construction of depressions and their arrangement. The individual films of the silencer elements are arranged pointing at one another, specifically at a distance from one another, the cavity additionally serving to absorb sound and, moreover, possibly being filled with sound-absorbing materials. It is possible to use such silencer elements to assemble silencers in practically any shape and size. <IMAGE>
