The readout system includes a transport mechanism for moving a film (1) past a beam of ultraviolet light, optical elements (16,17,12,11,9,8,13) for directing the beam onto digitally coded soundtracks on the film to cause these soundtracks to emit visible light, and an image detector (14) to detect the emitted light. The emitted light is directed to detector (14) via optical elements (13,8,9,11). The readout system is enclosed to provide dark environment except for the beam of ultraviolet light and the emitted visible light.. Such a system is used in a motion picture projection system. Because fluorescent compounds will not interfere with visual images on the film, the soundtrack may be imprinted over the visible image portion of the film, and digital coding enables complete digital sound handling, including mixing and editing without tape hiss or noise or degradation of the sound signal. |
