PURPOSE:To obtain stable performance free from deterioration owing to wear by irradiating an optical base plate having varying density and detecting the change in the electrical output of a photodetector with a change in the quantity of the light transmitted through said plate owing to the movement of either the base plate or the photodetector. CONSTITUTION:When a wind direction plate 103 receives wind pressure, an optical base plate 105 having the pattern changing continuously in density from a dark part P to a pale part Q rotates together with a revolving shaft 102. The light emitted from a light source 110 is made incident through the plate 105 and the slit-shaped through-hole 111' of a diaphragm mechanism 111 to a photodetector 109. The output thereof is inputted to an electrical indicator and the direction of the plate 103 is detected by the change in the output thereof. The stable performance with less deterioration owing to wear is thus obtd.
