The sides of the car seat are formed by metal pressings, with lipped edges and with the support holes for the hinge reinforced to provide a lightweight structure with minimum inertial mass. The reinforcing provides sufficient strength for the hinge supports to protect the occupant from impacts. The reinforcement can include ridges pressed into the thin walled structures near the hinge supports. Additional reinforcing plates can also be fitted around the supports.
