What is described is a device for operating a movable element (2), comprising the following components: a fitting which is solidly connected to this element (2) and which is provided with a reversible electric motor (7) displacing a pinion (13) on a rack (9) fastened to a supporting structure (1), and a self-locking mechanism which does not obtain the energy for operating it from the energy available at the output of the motor (7). This mechanism can comprise an electromagnet (15) moving a blocking element (18) which can engage into the rack (9) and can be disengaged from this again.
