For the production of filter rods in the tobacco processing industry, a strip (4) of filter tow is drawn off from a bale, spread out, stretched, treated, compacted to form a rod and then cut into filter plugs. During the stretching of the strip (4) of filter tow in one stretching direction (15'), an airflow is directed against the surfaces of the strip (4) of filter tow, between the pair of braking rollers (3) and the pair (9) of stretching rollers which follow downstream, by means of jets (46, 47) directed against the surface of the spread-out strip (4) of filter tow, as a result of which airflow the fibres of the strip of filter tow are deflected to different extents in the direction of stretching out of the plane of the strip of filter tow and are thus separated. <IMAGE>
