The heater has an air-guiding housing (1) which has an inlet opening (2) and an outlet opening (3) for the air to be heated and in which a firing housing (7) and a portion of the flue (12) are arranged such that the air to be heated flows around them, the flue (12) passing at a distance above the firing housing (7) in the longitudinal direction of the latter and opening into a distributor box (13), and several mutually adjacent flue gas channels (14) passing from the distributor box (13) in the opposite direction to the flue (12) and opening into a collecting box (15) which is connected to the chimney. Deflecting elements (18) are arranged in the flue gas channels (14) in order to produce a zigzag flow of the flue gases. <IMAGE>
