The drum consists of the lower portion 1 in which the piston slider 2 moves axially and bears, in its closing position, against the sealing ring 3 in the drum cover 4, thus closing the discharge openings 5 in the lower portion of the drum. To carry out partial emptyings, closing liquid is let out of the closing chamber by alternate actuation of the piston valves 8,9. Since the piston slider always initially sinks to where the channels 7 open into the closing chamber 6, one-sided solids discharge and hence after a few emptyings, dangerous imbalances arise, in the case of centrifuge drums with only one piston valve, or two simultaneously actuated, but unequally working, piston valves. By the alternate actuation of at least two symmetrically arranged piston valves, the one-sided solids build-up in the drum is nipped in the bud. <IMAGE>
