In order to limit the noise emission of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, the engine output is so controlled that the temporary variation of the engine speed n as a function of the instantaneous engine speed n is always less than a predetermined speed change-speed characteristic (47) stored for example in a read-only memory. The characteristic (47) remains constant within a lower speed range and then in an upper speed range up to an upper limit speed (nb1) decreases to the speed change value zero.
