PURPOSE:In preparing ethanol by reacting CH3OH with CO and H2 in the presence of a catalyst containing Co carbonyl and an alkylphosphine, to obtain the titled compound in high selectivity, by using cobalt sulfate as a cocatalyst. CONSTITUTION:CH3OH is reacted with Co and H2 in the presence of a catalyst containing Co carbonyl and an alkylphosphine as active ingredient and a cocatalyst of cobalt sulfate to give ethanol. An amount of cobalt sulfate used is 0.05- 0.5 atom calculated sulfur atom based on 1 total Co atom, and an amount of total Co based on CH3OH is required to correspond the above-mentioned range. Preferably the reaction temperature is 200-260 deg.C, and the pressure is 150- 450kg/cm<2>. |
