PURPOSE:To enhance engine efficiency and the cycle efficiency as well as prolong the life of a piston ring by interposing an O-ring between the back surface of piston ring and the bottom surface of the same and by reducing the contact surface pressure between the piston ring and cylinder liner. CONSTITUTION:At the sealing surface of a piston ring 3 and a cylinder liner 2, an approx. linear pressure is generated with its boundary condition at a pressure Pi on high pressure side and at Pi-1 on low pressure side. To the back surface of piston ring 3, the gas pressure Pi on high pressure side is applied owing to the sealing effect of O-ring 30, while the gas pressure Pi-1 on low pressure side to the inside of the O-ring groove. Therefore the contact surface pressure of the piston ring 1 and cylinder liner 2 can be designed at an optional value by selecting the proportion of the high pressure side gas acting width 2b on the back surface of piston ring to the total width 2a to a proper value. |
