A power line (or telephone line) transmission system, typically intended for transmitting digital signals between individual electrical power consumers and a power supplier, comprises a respective power line transmitter 10/1-10/N incorporating a radio receiver 110/1-110/N at each consumer location and a power line receiver 50 incorporating another radio receiver 110/NH at the power supplier's location. Broadcast radio control signals are transmitted from a central location to all the radio receivers, and timing signals are derived from them and used to control both the instants at which the digital signals to be transmitted are applied to the power line by the power line transmitters and the instants at which the power line receiver looks for the digital signals. <IMAGE>
