Clavulanic acid and its alkali metal salts, of formula (I) (in which M is H, Na or K) is made by a fermentation process in which streptomyces sp. P-6621 (FERM-P No.2804) is incubated in a culture medium contg. appropriate nutrients and mineral salts under aerobic conditions. When fermentation is complete the soln. is centrifuged and the acid sepd. by chromatography in a column.
