Cyclotrisiloxanes are made by reacting a siloxane of the formula where each R is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical and may be the same or different and x is halogen or an acyloxy radical, with 0À9 to 2À5 mols of water per mol of siloxane in contact with an amine acid-acceptor at a temperature of at least 40‹C. in an inert solvent. The radical R may be alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, alkaryl and aralkyl, and examples of halogen substituents are chlorine, bromine and fluorine. Any amine may be used as the acid-acceptor, and any solvent which is free from active hydrogen. The examples specify pyridine, α-picoline, alkylamine, octadecylamine, aniline, benzylamine and ethylene-diamine. Among the products are (Ph 2 SiO)(Me 2 SiO) 2 , (Ph 2 SiO)(PhMeSiO) 2 , (Me 2 SiO) 2 (M(e)(PhCHMe CH 2 )SiO), (Me 2 SiO) 2 (PhViSiO), (Me 2 SiO) 2 (CF 3 CH 2 CH 2 Si(Me)O), (Me 2 SiO) 2 (C 18 H 37 SiMeO), and (Me 2 SiO)(PhMeSiO)(MeViSiO).
