Title compd. was prepd. in an aq. process by reaction of I(X=sulfo, cyano) and a cyanide source in the presence of a quaternary ammonium compd., optionally in the presence of a dehydrogenating agent. Thus, a mixt. of benzyltrimethylammonium chloride 360, I(X=sulfo) 110, nitrobenzene 30, and water 840 parts was stirred, the pH adjusted to 7, and aq. NaCN added dropwise to give 86.7 parts of a dark blue powder contg. title compd. 90.5, 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone 1,6 and I(X=sulfo)1.2%.
