The display device has a liquid crystal (1) between a front backing plate (3) and a rear backing plate (4) parallel thereto. A polariser (5) is arranged in front of the front backing plate (4). The backing plates (3, 4) are provided with electrode layers (6, 7). The electrode layer (7) on the rear backing plate (4) is metallic. The rear backing plate (4) is additionally provided with a reflective layer (8) made from metal scales (8.1) embedded in a binding agent. Loose metal scales (8.1.1) can cause short circuits between electrode layers (6, 7). Such short circuits are reliably prevented by an oxide layer (9) provided according to the invention between the electrode layer (7) on the rear backing plate (4) and the reflective layer (8). <IMAGE>
