The process is used to regenerate the contact liquid which is used in the production of acetaldehyde from acetylene by mercury-catalysed addition of water. The spent contact liquid is treated at between 90 and 150 DEG C with HNO3, the addition of the HNO3 being controlled by a redox potentiometer.
