The cycle of the discharges applied between the workpiece electrode and the wire electrode of a machine for cutting using erosive discharges includes a first phase (TD) during which a striking (sparkover) voltage is applied, preferably progressively, between the electrodes until striking (sparkover) of a low-level discharge (IO), a second phase (TA) during which a source of current (Ip) and of high voltage is turned on for a first short-duration time interval, the current level of each discharge being determined in relation to the length of the first phase (TD), and a third phase (TB) during the which the discharge current is interrupted for a second time interval. This discharge cycle enables the machining current to be increased without causing breakage of the wire. <IMAGE>
