The starter allowing rapid and flicker-free lighting of the tube, independently of the ambient temperature, is inserted in place of the customary starter. It comprises an electronic voltage-controlled switch (1) and a voltage divider (3, 4) enclosing an element (4) whose conductivity changes under the influence of light, in parallel with the switch. The control of the latter is linked to a point of the voltage divider which is chosen to apply the re-enabling voltage to the switch when the tube is unlit, and when the tube begins to glow, the voltage for disabling the switch is attained. The photosensitive element - a photoresistor (4), a phototransistor, a photodiode etc. - is placed opposite one electrode of the tube and is sheltered from spurious light. A second photosensitive element can be used to compensate for the vestiges of spurious light. <IMAGE>
