984,858. Vehicle spring suspension. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Sept. 27, 1963 [Oct. 3, 1962], No. 38251/63. Heading B7D. In a rear wheel suspension for a front wheel drive vehicle, each rear wheel 10 is mounted with negative camber on a suspension link 11 pivotable about an axis 18 which is inclined forwardly and outwardly at an acute angle to the longitudinal centre plane 17 of the vehicle (Fig. 1) and, in projection on a plane extending transversely of the vehicle, is located above the wheel's rotational axis 16 (Fig. 2) in the entire region between the plane 19 of the wheel and the point of intersection (not shown) of the wheel axis 16 and the road surface. The pivot axis 18 preferably lies in a horizontal plane and intersects the plane 19 of the wheel at a point 20 (Fig. 3) on a line 24 joining the ground contact point 21 of the wheel with a point 20 which divides a horizontal line through the vehicle's centre of gravity Sp proportionally to the braking forces BV, BH at the front and rear wheels. The link 11 is connected to the' vehicle frame 15 about the pivot axis 18 by means of resilient bearings 14 which are stiffer radially than axially and have their axes 25 intersecting forwardly of the axis 18 to maintain the position of the latter when lateral forces act on the wheel. A spring unit 31 comprising a helical spring arranged coaxially about a shock absorber is connected to the link 11 below the plane of the axis 18 and is disposed along an inclined axis 32 which projects upon the plane of the link 11 at right angles to the axis 18, progressive spring action being thereby obtained. |
