PURPOSE:To shorten time required until stabilized optical output is achieved by enhancing the efficiency of conversion to ultraviolet radiation by charging mercury, at least one of tin and lead and an alloy made of bismuth and indium in an airtight case. CONSTITUTION:Mercury, at least one of tin and lead and an alloy made of bismuth and indium are charged in an airtight case having electrodes at its ends to constitute a low pressure mercury vapor electric-discharge lamp. The quantity of the alloy charged is 1.5-23 times as much as the total weight of mercury charged in the same case. The alloy contains 30-72wt% of bismuth, 4-50wt% of indium and 15-57wt% of tin or 5-40wt% of lead. Instead of the above content of tin or lead, the alloy may contain 15-57wt% of tin and 1-12wt% of lead. As a result, the efficiency of conversion to ultraviolet radiation is enhanced, thereby enabling time required until stabilized optical output is achieved to be reduced. |
