PURPOSE:To enable high-density recording by forming a magnetic layer consisting of columnar crystals of an Fe-base magnetic metal on a nonmagnetic substrate by a diagonal vapor deposition method and by treating the magnetic layer in an aqueous Co salt soln. under a strong alkali condition so as to increase the coercive force. CONSTITUTION:Columnar Fe crystals 2 are deposited on a nonmagnetic support 1 by a diagonal vapor deposition method at >=40 deg. incident angle to form a layer of about 500-3,500Angstrom thickness. The layer is immersed in an aqueous Co salt soln., the concn. of an alkali in the soln. is adjusted to 1-12mol/l, and the reactive soln. is heated to modify the crystals 2 with Co. The layer is then washed and dried at a prescribed temp. Cobalt chloride or the like is used as the Co salt, and the hydroxide of an alkali metallic element such as lithium hydroxide as a strong alkali is contained as the alkali. |
