In order to improve the fuel economy and reduce the emission contents in the exhaust gases, a multi-cylinder vehicle engine is sectioned to provide independently functionable groups of cylinders 46, 47; 49-51, connected to a fuel supply system which can engage and disengage the groups as desired. One cylinder 48 in the row of cylinders has no piston or associated crank mechanism, and the crankshaft of the engine is sectioned opposite this cylinder. The crankshaft parts carry bevelled gears 54, 55, which are in engagement with a multiple-disc clutch 53 situated outside of the crankshaft and connected to a transmission 43 containing a differential gear driving shaft parallel with the crankshaft. The gears 54, 55 also drive shafts 61, 62 extending upwards through the pistonless cylinder 48 and actuating the camshafts 64, 63 of the cylinder groups 46, 47; 49- 51. <IMAGE> |
