Method for continuously extinguishing hydraulic flying ash containing anhydrous free lime of the type in which the ash to be treated is transferred into a reactor from one end of the reactor to another end of the said reactor with the introduction of pressurised water at a high temperature into a middle zone of the reactor (further from the exit of the reactor than from the entrance) characterised in that the reactor is formed in two longitudinally adjacent compartments with the ash passing from one compartment to the other, the compartments called the upstream compartment and downstream compartment being separated by a partition made of a thermally conducting material. <IMAGE>
