The boom section (14) for a crane or the like comprises four longitudinal stiffening members (16), interconnected with four flat longitudinal plates (17) embossed at various intervals (20). The arrangement is such that the boom has diamond-shaped cross-section. The boom section (14) telescopes within a boom section (12). Bearings (22) are provided on the inner face of the members of the section (12) to bear against the outer face of the members of the section (14). The bearings comprise pads (24) to take up horizontal forces and pads (26) to take up vertical forces.
