To allow an automatic warping operation, without previously having to determine exactly the respective cone angle, the warping support (4) acquires a jib (32) displaceable transversely to its direction of displacement and moving away from the winding axis (31) in accordance with the yarn build-up. Moreover, the warping support (4) acquires a device (34) which interacts with the support drive (5) and which keeps the jib (32) at a predetermined distance from the warping cone (3). The withdrawal of the jib (32) in accordance with the growth of the wound package (22) can take place, for example, by means of a roller (43) bearing against the wound package (22). The device (34) can possess a proximity sensor (38) connected to the jib (32) and directed towards the warping cone. By means of an operative connection (40), a controller (35) belonging to the device (34) can act on the support drive (5) in such a way that the warping support (4) and therefore also the proximity sensor (38) always maintain a predetermined distance from the warping cone (3). <IMAGE>
