An appts. to form knots on a fabric to be variegated has a pinion and rack unit, a ring member (5), and a cylindrical drum(70) with a plurality of prickles (71) to hold and feed the fabric (79). The pinion has a downwards-bent shaft (20') and a thread-guide groove(18). The bent shaft has one prickle (24) at its end to pick up one portion of the fabric. A thered(F) from the guide groove is wound around the bent shaft to form loops according to the rotation of the pinion, and then the wound thread loops are threshed downwards to the prickled portion of the fabric by reversing the ring member so as to form knots.
