To manufacture reams (19a to 19e) of paper from sheets (11a to 11e) of paper of at least two different formats, a web (3) of paper is divided into paper strips (8a to 8e) of correspondingly different widths, which paper strips (8a to 8e) are jointly cut in a transverse manner, so that the desired sheets (11a to 11e) of paper are produced. These are arranged in an imbricated manner and collected into quires (19a to 19e) of paper which are in their turn piled up to form reams (22a to 22e) of paper. The reams (22a to 22e) of paper are discharged on a connected conveying device (23) in different directions, depending on the formats of their respective sheets. <IMAGE>
