In a heating furnace of this kind with ceramic hearths or hearth banks 13, the openings 9 for the delivery and removal of the material to be heated are arranged in constricted end regions 3,4 of the furnace chamber 2 in the chamber roof 6 above the hearth 13 and can be closed with doors 10, in order to prevent damage to the hearth surfaces during placing and removal of the pieces 8 of material to be heated. Conveyor devices 11 for the material to be heated, with displaceable lifting rams 19 which can be lowered through the door openings 9, are arranged above the furnace. To obviate the exit of flue gas on the roof side and the corresponding incursion of cold air into the furnace chamber 2, shut-off valves 15, which can be lowered vertically as far as the hearth 13, are arranged near the door openings 9 and keep the furnace chamber 2 closed when the doors 10 are opened. <IMAGE>
