Vinyl or vinylidene chloride polymers are stabilized by incorporating therein a cyclic ester in which an antimony atom is linked to an aromatic ring through two oxygen atoms in positions ortho to one another. Preferred compounds are acid esters of antimonious acid and the alkylammonium salts thereof. The esters may be used together with known stabilizers such as triphenyl phosphite, epoxidized vegetable oils and a -phenyl indole. Examples describe compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride and (1 and 3) antimonyl pyrocatechate or antimonyl t-butyl pyrocatechate, together with (4) sodium acetate, (6) alkyl sulphonic acid esters of phenol/cresol mixtures, or (7) dioctyl phthalate; (2 and 5) antimonyl t-butyl catechate and triphenyl phosphite, epoxidized vegetable oil or a -phenyl indole; (8) the triethanolammonium salt of the antimonious acid ester of 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene, the dibutylethanol ammonium salt of the antimonious acid ester of 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene, the dibutylethanolammonium salt of the antimonious acid ester of 4 - t-butyl pyrocatechol, the dibutylethanolammonium salt of the antimonious acid ester of 4-chloropyrocatechol or the diethanolammonium salt of the antimonious acid ester of 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene; (9) the dibutylethanolammonium salt of the antimonious acid ester of 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene and dioctyl phthalate, diphenyl cresyl phosphate, trioctyl phosphate, adipic acid-pentaglycol polyester or a mixture of dioctylphthalate and a polyether thioether; and (10) the dibutylethanolammonium salt of the antimonious acid ester of 4-chloro-pyrocatechol and alkyl sulphonic acid esters of phenol/cresol mixtures, tricresyl phosphate, trioctyl phosphate or mixtures of dioctyl phthalate and a polyether thioether. The stability of the compositions of the invention is compared with that of compositions containing other organic antimony compounds. |
