PURPOSE:To inexpensively obtain a honeycomb shaped filter having high efficiency, by a method alumina cement is used as a binder to mold a honeycomb body and, after the orifices thereof are sealed with the same material, said honeycomb body is cured under a high temp. and humidity condition and subjected to heat treatment after drying. CONSTITUTION:Alumina cement is used as a binder for obtaining a honeycomb shaped filter in an amount of 30-60wt%. Molten silica is added to said cement as an aggregate material while a carbonaceous compound such as a hydrocarbon compound for obtaining porosity and, further, a cellulosic compound, oil and a surfactant as molding aids each for imparting viscosity and flowability required during molding are used in an amount of 1-10wt%. Water is added to these components and the resulting mixture is molded into a honeycomb shape after kneading the same. The orifices of this honeycomb body are sealed with the same material at specific positions. Thus formed honeycomb body is perfectly cured under a high temp. and humidity condition or in hot water and, after drying, subjected to heat treatment at a temp. for burning the carbonaceous compound.
