PURPOSE:To enlarge pores to be formed in a porosity forming process and increase the area carrying catalysts to increase power generating performance by previously graphitizing a carbon electrode plate. CONSTITUTION:Carbon black having a mean particle size of 10-20mu is used as carbon material, and kneaded with petroleum pitch which is used as a binder. The mixture is formed in a desired electrode plate. The electrode plate is burned in a furnace having a temperature of about 1,000 deg.C for 5-7hr. This carbon electrode plate mainly comprising soft carbon is heated in an atmosphere of reducing gas such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen, or hydrogen gas at 2,400-2,700 deg.C for 2-3 days. The graphitized carbon electrode plate is activated by exposing in a steam of 850-950 deg.C for 5-10hr. Carbon on the surface of the plate is gasified to make porous. Platinum catalysts are carried on the plate. A methanol fuel cell using this carbon electrode plate has an excellent power generating performance as shown in the figure. |
