PURPOSE:To obtain chromium steel at a low cost by mixing fine chrome ore of a prescribed grain size with calcium carbonate powder or other powdered substance which produces calcium oxide by decomposition at a high temp., granulating the mixture, and charging the resulting granules of a prescribed grain size into a converter. CONSTITUTION:Calcium carbonate and/or calcium hydroxide and chrome ore are crushed to prepar powder with <=1mm. grain size. The calcium compounds produce calcium oxide as well as gas by thermal decomposition at a high temp. The powder is mixed with a binder such as pitch or sodium silicate, and the mixture is granulated to form granules with >=10mm. grain size. The granules are charged into a converter and refined. Chromium steel is obtd. at a low cost using chrome ore in place of ferrochrome. |
