The device comprises a motor (8) and a shaft (7) coupled to the leaf-opening mechanism. Interposed between the two is a screw (11) connected in terms of rotation to the motor (8), but freely rotatable relative to the shaft (7). A follower (16) interacting with the screw (11) has a lateral stud (51) which can bear on a finger (54) fixed to the shaft (7) when the follower (16) is adjacent to the shaft (7) and against a longitudinal stop (52) in all the other positions. The follower (16) is coupled to the leaf-locking mechanism by means of a lever (27) and a cable (36). The invention is used for operating a door leaf at the same time ensuring that it is automatically released after opening and locked after closing.
