beta -Lactam compounds of formula (I):

and salts and esters thereof; wherein
R<3> is hydrogen or an organic radical;
n is zero or 1;
R<4> and R<5> are hydrogen or C1-3 alkyl;
X is optionally substituted C1-6 alkylene;
Y is optionally substituted amino;
are useful for treatment of bacterial infections. Processes for preparing compounds of formula (I) and pharmaceutical compositions containing them are also claimed.
