A gas spring (10) having a piston (15) which is arranged on a piston rod (11) and, on its side facing away from the piston rod (11), is provided with a piston bore (32). The piston bore (32) contains a spring space (23) in which a helical spring (16) or a compressed gas are arranged. The helical spring (16) acts against a valve pin (18) by means of which a valve opening (24) of a valve seat (26) which closes the piston bore (32) can be closed. The piston (15) has a bypass flow cross-section (21) which can be closed by means of the valve opening (24) or the valve pin (18). In normal operation, the operating pressure in the gas space (19) is higher than the spring characteristic of the helical spring (16). If the operating pressure in the gas space (19) drops, then the helical spring (16) closes the valve opening (24) and thus prevents the piston rod moving in suddenly. <IMAGE>
