The invention relates to a device for covering the welding gap between two pipes which are to be welded to one another using protective gas and have a belt which covers the welding gap. A re-usable device which is not hazardous to health is characterised in that the belt has a recess extending over part of its length as a passage for a welding electrode and a closure for connecting the ends of the belt.
