PURPOSE:To improve the mechanical strength and thermal stability of a substrate by using dense alumina as the material of the substrate and by forming a photomagnetic recording layer on the substrate. CONSTITUTION:A substrate 12 made of dense alumina is attached to a holder 13 and placed opposite to a target 12 attached to a holder 14. While biasing the substrate 12 with a DC power source 16, a high frequency voltage is applied from a high frequency power source 17. Gaseous Ar is introduced, and the components of the target 15 such as Tb-Fe, Gd-Co or the like sputtered by Ar<+> are deposited on the substrate 12 to form a photomagnetic recording layer. Since the substrate 12 is made of dense alumina, the mechanical strength and heat resistance of the substrate 12 are improved.
