摘要 Apparatus for controlling the traction motor 12 of a vehicle 10 is provided in the form of a motor- generator 30 which is controlled by control means 34 to supply variable power to a given length of track and which is connected to an energy storage source including a flywheel 28. The apparatus is fixedly located relative to the given length of track and when a vehicle 10 on that length of track is decelerated, energy from the vehicle 10 is transferred through the traction motor 12 to the motor/generator 30 and the flywheel 28. A transportation system comprises a number of successively arranged lengths of track each with its own dedicated control apparatus and it is preferred that where there are N vehicles there should be at least (N + 1) lengths of track to ensure that there should be only one vehicle per length of track and at least one length of track should be vacant to enable the flywheel to be driven up to speed from the power source driving the motor/generator. The control means of each apparatus may respond to a number of predetermined parameters to ensure that security of the system and to control the vehicle in accordance with a predetermined speed/distance/time profile. <IMAGE>
