A plate press with a gap, with two pressing plates (1, 3), the first (1) of which is supported on the mount of the press by means of supports (2) and the second (3) of which can be pressed against the first using pressure cylinders (5) to exert pressure on the mat of material between the plates. The pressure cylinders are arranged in a plurality of successive groups in the longitudinal direction of the press, in which groups the points of action (7) of the cylinders are parallel to one another. They supports (2) of the first pressing plate (1) are also arranged in successive groups in the longitudinal direction of the press, in which groups the supports are parallel to one another. The groups of points of action (7) of the cylinders on the one hand and the groups of supports (2) on the other hand are nested in one another such that the pressing plates are bent in an undulating fashion in the longitudinal direction of the press. The invention aims to make the pressing plates (1, 3) more rigid, so that they experience less bending and the pressing accuracy is increased.
