Quartz sand molded elements, obtainable from dry quartz sand by the action of a high voltage electrostatic field due to the orientation and optionally the electrostatic charge of the quartz sand grains in the electric field, and to the sintering in the orientation state thus obtained. A particular advantage of the method is that neither a binder nor water to consolidate the sand matrix is required. The plant according to the present invention comprises substantially a field device to apply an electrostatic field to the quartz sand and a downstream sintering furnace and, if necessary, a desiccator and a conveyor upstream of the field device. The molded elements according to the present invention are characterized by a high mechanical strength and a high porosity, as well as by excellent sound damping and thermal insulating properties. They may be conveniently used in many application fields, particularly as building materials and as a substitute for gravel. |
