Imidazoles and triazoles of formula (I) and their salts with protic acids and complexes with metal ions are new. In (I), A is N (cpds. (Ia) or C-Q3 (cpds. (Ib)); Q1-Q3 are each H or Me; R1 is 2-18C alkyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl, naphthyl, or phenyl substd. by R4 and R5, provided R1 is not 2-5C alkyl in (Ia); R4 and R5 are independently H, halogen, OMe, OCF3, SMe, SO2Me, phenyl or phenoxy (both opt. substd. by halogen, 1-4C alkyl and/or CF3), CF3, 1-4C alkyl or cyclohexyl; provided R4 and R5 are not both H in (Ib); R2 and R3 are independently 1-6C alkyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl, OR6, or phenyl substd. by R4 and R5 (where the above proviso in (Ib) does not apply); provided R2 and R3 are not both OH; R6 is H or 1-6C alkyl, or one R6 gp. may be of formula (II); or R2 and R3 together form a glycol bridge of formula O(CH2)2O, O(CH2)3O, O(CH2)4O or OCH2CH=CHCH2O, which is opt. substd. by 1-4 alkyl gps. with a total of 1-4C. (I) are fungicides which are effective against a broad spectrum of plant pathogens, e.g. Vaccinia recondita, Erysiphe graminis, E. cichoracearum, Venturia inaequalis, Helminthosporium maydis, Cercospora arachidicola, Uromyces phaseoli, Monilinia fructicola, Rhizoctonia solani, Piricularia oryzae, Phytophthora infestans and Pythium aphanadermatum. They can be applied to foliage at 1-500 ppm or less, to soil at 0.1-20 kg/ha or to seeds at 0.06-3 g/kg.
