A hydrocarbon is recovered from a mixture containing components of different molecular shape or size by selective conversion of at least one of the components by contact with a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having catalytic materials incorporated and having a pore size large enough to admit certain components which are accordingly selectively converted and small enough to exclude others which are unchanged and separating the converted from the unconverted materials. The mixture may contain, for example, linear and non-linear components and a 5-13 </>rA molecular sieve may be used. The conversion effected may be cracking, hydrocracking, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, alkylation, dealkylation, oxidation or isomerization. Where possible the converted component after separation may be reconverted to its original form. The catalyst may be in the sodium form or may be base exchanged to introduce Ca, Mg, Ag, Cu, Hg, Cd, Ni, An, Co, Zn, Sr, Pt or rare earth metals or may be converted to the hydrogen form and is modified to introduce other catalytic materials, e.g. Zn, Co, Ni, Ag, or a platinum metal. The process may also be applied to non-hydrocarbon mixtures when one component may be converted to and recovered as a hydrocarbon. In the Examples: (1) using a 5 </>rA molecular sieve containing platinum, n-butenes in a mixture with isobutene are selectively hydrogenated to n-butane and the product separated into isobutene and n-butane; (2) similarly 2-methylbutene-1 is recovered from a mixture with pentene-1 which is converted to and recovered as n-pentane.
