PURPOSE:To accurately measure the breathing capacity of an animal, by a method wherein the head part including at least the nose and mouth of the animal or the body part thereof is covered with a container having a definite volume and the minute pressure change or sound wave generated by the breathing of the animal in the container is measured. CONSTITUTION:For example, a mouse is put in a transparent container 1 having a shape and a dimension capable of receiving an animal in a semi-restrained state so as not to apply strong stress thereto. A conical shoulder part 3 is provided to the leading end of the container 1 and an opening for protruding the head part including the nose and mouth of the mouse is formed to the tip part of said shoulder part 3 while a container 2 having a chamber 10 with a definite volume is attached to the container 1 in a detachable manner. A sensor 11 for measuring pressure change or a sound wave caused by the breathing of the animal, an air introducing pipe 12, an outlet pipe 13 and a flow meter 16 are mounted to the container 2. A plug 9 having a notch 8 is inserted into the container 2 and the tail of the mouse is protruded through the notch 8 to enable the injection of medicines. In this case, a sensor 21 receiving only the body part of the animal may be used as shown by the separate drawing. |
