<p>An incentive inhalation device which induces respiratory exercise and which is cheap, safe and easy to use and operate. The device includes a container that has a number of flow measurement chambers which are vertical when the device is in an erect position. Each chamber contains a flow rate indicator, such as a light object and ball, which normally rests at the bottom thereof. The bottom of each chamber is open to the surrounding atmosphere and the upper part of each chamber is open to a passage. In operation, the patient or user extracts air from the air passage and from the chambers. When the patient achieves the precalibrated flow rates, the indicators will rise sequentially to the upper part of each chamber. In one embodiment of the invention, the emphasis of the device is on the duration, making the precalibrated flow rate essentially equal for each chamber. In another embodiment of the invention, the emphasis of the device lies in the greater effort and greater duration by reason of having different precalibrated flow rates for at least two of the chambers. In order to prevent interruption of the flow of air to the passage and surprise or frighten the user, means are provided in the last chamber of the device to prevent the indicator from closing this chamber to the air passage.</p> |
