Decorative panels for lining walls, ceilings, etc. have a rigid base (2) having complementary semi-interlocking tongue and groove profiles along their edges and a surface layer of compressible material (which extends slightly beyond at least two and pref. all of the vertically stepped edges of the panel. For panels having a base made of solid or reconstituted timber, pref. impregnated with resins and fire-retardant agents, the surface layer is pref. of expanded PVC having a thickness of about 1/4 of that of the core and extending beyond the edges of the base by at least 1 mm along half the edges of 0.5 mm along all the edges. Opt. a layer of non-woven fabric is interposed in the interface between (2) and (7), to facilitate subsequent removal of the surface layer (7) is desired. The underside of the base may be extended along the 'grooved' edges, pref. with a slight rebate. Opt. the underside of the base is covered with similar material to the top of the panel, or with a complementary material such as a reflective/ insulating layer of aluminium sheet or foil. The surface layer (7) may be covered with a decorative fabric.
