In order to simplify a method of producing four-tip slitting cutters, in particular for the production of wood wool, the slitting cutters being made from endless strip steel, and thus to substantially reduce the cost of the slitting cutters, it is proposed that at least one cutting edge be rolled on the endless strip steel, that the strip steel provided with cutting edges be notched in the transverse direction, the notching also extending over the area of the rolled-on cutting edges, that the bores necessary for threading together the slitting cutters be punched into the strip steel, that the strip steel be rounded and extended at the preliminary notched points, that the slitting cutters be cut to length from the endless strip steel and that they be cut off by squeezing, and that during the squeezing operation a bevel be made on the two narrow sides of the slitting cutters separated from one another.
