Centring device for an optical fibre

A centring device holds an optical fibre along an axis by means of three parts of a fibre-retaining device and a retainer element. The retainer element has a concentric cylindrical cutout or opening which holds the parts assembled. The parts are essentially identical, and in each case have a uniform cross-sectional shape at right angles along a main part of their length. The opening ends in a planar wall at right angles to the axis. It can contain an axially aligned depression in the shape of a conical frustum. In this way, an inserted fibre is guided smoothly along a wall of the depression and stopped when the cross-sectional dimensions of the depression are no longer greater than the diameter of the inserted fibre. It is desirable for the end of the fibre to be arranged at the focal point of the retainer element. <IMAGE>
