A method for testing the operating state of brakes with brake linings subject to wear is described in which, in order to determine and display the brake lining wear on the individual wheel brakes for each brake actuation, the brake cylinder lift is measured and the smallest in each case of a number of measured lift values is determined and stored. The stored data are used as criterion for the status display. At the same time the amounts of wear are advantageously added up and visually displayed so that at any time the total amount of wear and hence the residual thickness of the brake lining can be determined. <IMAGE>
